it took me weeks to get used to the idea that he considered me an equal…a part of the team. but before i realized it, we were like brothers.
i believe in you, steve. i believe in captain america. all that hooey about symbol of liberty, fighting american, — even someone like me could fall for it… i guess ‘cause we need a captain america. i need a captain america.

don’t let bucky drift back into anger and confusion. he has a chance at a new life - help him find his way. save him for me.
i miss a lot of people, but him more than anyone.
i knew it. i knew you were still in there.
and i think if bucky doesn’t keep wearing that uniform…if he doesn’t keep being captain america…i think he may die…and i couldn’t live with that. even if it means i have to sacrifice a future i want.
i was never prouder than when i saw him pick up that shield to carry on in my place.

When he repeated himself, this time in halting Russian, the man looked up at him. He was wearing a black domino mask, and his long hair fell around his face, but he looked familiar. He looked like— Steve didn’t let himself finish that thought.
“Your Russian’s lousy,” the man said, in an accent that was pure Brooklyn, and Steve nearly dropped his gun.
“Take off your mask,” he ordered the man in black.
“Nyet,” the man said.
“Do it,” Steve said, “or I’ll— I’ll—”
The man in black made a placating gesture— okay, okay— and reached up to peel off the mask. He pushed his tangled hair back from his face and looked Steve in the eye.
